Pietersite begins as a volcanic lava flow. Air bubbles are created, and they fill with silica-rich fluids. Over time, mineral-rich water, usually containing iron oxide and amphibole fibers, seeps into the cavities. As it cools and solidifies, it turns into a type of chalcedony known as pietersite.
